Can I prescreen for certain demographics or target certain participants? Which demographic filters do you offer?

On Prolific, you have the option to enter prescreening criteria to filter the participants you need.

Here are a few examples of the several hundred demographic criteria you can currently filter by:

  • Sex
  • Age
  • Nationality
  • Country of Birth
  • Current country of residence
  • Within the United States: Current US state of residence and US state of birth
  • First Language
  • Ethnicity
  • Employment status & domain
  • Student status & field of study
  • Political affiliation
  • Religious affiliation
  • Sexual orientation
  • Handedness
  • Marital status
  • Socioeconomic status
  • Participants' approval rate (how well did participants do in past studies?)

You can check how many eligible participants we have for each criteria by creating a study and going to the "Prescreening" tab (step 3). From there, you can select for the demographics you need. The system will then tell you the number of participants meeting your criteria.

Below, I'm selecting for US and UK Nationals. In the third image, you can see there are 24,875 eligible participants meeting this criteria, from an overall pool of 38,575 (first image).

We'll report the number of participants who match your criteria and have logged in within the past 90 days (so are accessible). We don't report the numbers of total eligible participants, as these will inflate the numbers of accessible participants.
 
Please note: All prescreening criteria are self-reported. The only criterion that we actively check is "Current country of residence". Also, participants can't immediately change their prescreening answers. They can delete them, but will only be able to re-enter them after the currently active studies are completed.
 
If you require an additional custom prescreening filter to obtain your target sample, please feel free to contact our support team. All screening on Prolific must be done using the internal screening system outlined in this article - you cannot screen participants within your survey. Click here to read more about this.
